Blood Sugar and the Glycemic Index

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD, ADHD)

By Dr. Stephen Lindsteadt

Blood Sugar and the Glycemic Index

Our brain works on blood sugar and it is critical that these children learn to eat in such a way as they do not spike their insulin levels. Once it spikes, the release of insulin is stimulated which quickly drives the blood sugar to very low levels. This volatility leads to erratic behavior and difficulty in concentrating even on the simplest task.

If you are in doubt, give your child a large coke and observe his or her behavior over the next 2 to 3 hours. What most parents don’t realize is the fact that when children eat white bread, white flour, pasta, rice, and potatoes their glucose will spike faster than if they were spooning table sugar right out of the sugar bowl. Parents, become familiar with the glycemic index and feed your children meals and snacks that will NOT spike their blood sugar.

Include in the diet all fruits and vegetables (except for those containing salicylates, listed below), plus breads, cereals, and crackers that contain only rice and oats.

Remove from the diet all forms of refined sugar and any products that contain it. Also eliminate all food that contain artificial colors, flavorings, or preservatives; processed and manufactured foods; and foods that contain salicylates. Certain foods naturally contain salicylates (Aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid is a drug in the family of salicylates). These include almonds, apples, apricots, cherries, currants, all berries, peaches, plums, prunes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and oranges.

Do not consume any of the following: apple cider vinegar, bacon, butter, candy catsup, chocolate, colored cheeses, chili sauce, corn, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meat, margarine, red meat, mustard, pork, salami, salt, soft drinks, soy sauce, sausage, tea, and wheat. Do not use antacid tablets, cough drops, perfume, throat lozenges, or commercial toothpaste (no fluoride).

Avoid carbonated beverages.

Exercise

Children with ADD/ADHD need to be involved in some sort of exercise program. An exercise program that is consistent and involves a lot of aerobic exertion, i.e., soccer, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, etc. is preferable. An exercise program needs to be fun and something your child looks forward to doing.

When you combine diet, exercise, and the nutritional supplementation as recommended together, the majority of children with ADD/ADHD will show significant improvement. Most of these children may also be able to come off their medication over time.

Cellular Nutrition for Children:

Children ages 1 to 4 years of age:

It is recommended giving these children 1 Usanimal daily. This may mean crushing the tablet and putting in a drink or sprinkling it on some. It is important to also consider giving these children 1 tsp pf OptOmega daily.

Children ages 5 to 8 years of age:

It is recommended giving these children 1 Usanimal twice daily. It is also recommend that they be taking 1 tsp of OptOmega and 1 Active Calcium tablet (or Active Calcium Chewable) daily.

Children ages 9 to 12:

It is recommended giving these children 1 to 2 Body Rox daily depending on the weight of the child. If they are over 75 pounds, they should be taking 2 Body Rox daily. In this age group, It is also recommended that they take 2 tsps of OptOmega and 2 Active Calcium tablets or Chewable tablets daily.

Children ages 13 to 18:

It is recommended that these children take 3 Body Rox daily along with 3 to 4 Active Calcium tablets or Chewable Active Calcium tablets. They should also be taking 2 tsps of OptOmega. Any adolescent in this age group who is suffering from a serious illness or weighs more than 120 pounds should also consider taking the Usana Essentials.

Optimizers:

Proflavanol:

It is recommended giving children 1 to 2 mg of Proflavanol per pound per day (this is 3 to 5 mg per kilogram) in at least two divided doses. The smaller Proflavanol tablet has 30 mg of Proflavanol in each tablet (the Proflavanol 90 has 90mg in each tablet). There is no problem using Proflavanol in children who over 2 years of age. These tablets may be crushed and placed in a drink or food with no loss of potency.

Coquinone 30:

It is recommended giving children 1 to 2 mg of Coquinone per pound per day (this is 3 to 5 mg per kilogram) in divided doses. Each Coquinone 30 has 30 mg of Coquinone. This capsule may be punctured and the contents squirted out into a drink or food with no loss of potency.

Poly C:

There is a very safe range of using Poly C in children. However, it is best to use 1 daily in children under 6 years of age and 2 to 4 daily in children over 7 years of age depending on the severity of their illness and their weight.

Consider a Power Shake

USANA has a fantastic line of nutritionally balanced drinks that many of my patients consume as a meal substitute. In fact, it is ideal to start every morning with 2 scoops of Fibergy, 2 scoops of Soyomax, and 2 teaspoonfuls of OptOmega. This provides a perfect, balanced, unpolluted meal to start the day. It allows the opportunity to supplement the diet with soy protein; extra needed fiber, and essential fat. This meal is also a low-glycemic meal, which will not spike the blood sugar. Likewise, many people are using their imaginations to create exceptionally tasting meals with Fibergy, OptOmega, and the USANA Lean Drinks. By blending in frozen, whole fruit for added flavor they are creating a variety of great tasting drinks.

Nutritional Supplements

Mega Antioxidant (Mega AO)
Chelated Mineral (Multi Mineral)
Active Calcium
Proflavanol 90
Coquinone 30
Poly C
BiOmega
Ginko-PS
5-HTP (100 – 200 mg 3 times per day)
Kava (45 – 70 mg 3 times per day)
Psy-Stabil (20 drops 3 to 4 times per day)
*Adding at least one serving of Fibergy daily will enhance these recommendations.

If you are frequently going to miss taking your lunchtime dose, it is better to simply take your nutritionals twice daily. I recommend taking 2 Mega Antioxidants, 1 Chelated Mineral in the morning with breakfast and then taking 1 Mega Antioxidant, 2 Chelated Minerals in the evening. You should try to divide up your Active Calcium, essential fats, and Optimizers equally as possible between the AM and PM dose.
